Meet our January's Personality of the Month at the Rocket Hockey Academy, Mr. Tunde Ogundele, a seasoned hockey player with a rich and illustrious career.
"Rocket Hockey Academy's Personality of the Month: Mr. Tunde Ogundele"
Since 1977, during the FESTAC year, Mr. Ogundele’s journey in hockey began while he was in Form 1 at Oro Grammar School, Kwara State. Initially playing Lawn Tennis for Kwara State, he transitioned to hockey under the mentorship of the late Tunde Adeyemi aka “Salt and Pepper”, a former Nigeria Goalkeeper.
Highlights of his remarkable hockey career include representing Kwara State at the National Sports Festival in 1981 and being the first-choice hockey goalkeeper for Irepodun LGA at Kwara State Sports Festival, earning a silver medal.
Mr. Ogundele’s achievements extend to national and international competitions, including the All Africa Games in Nairobi, Kenya, where he secured a bronze medal in 1987. Notably, he served as the hockey goalkeeper for Obafemi Awolowo University, winning gold at NUGA ’89. He played NUGA and WAUG for OAU and won gold medals
He was Union Bank Hockey’s goalkeeper at the John F. Kennedy Memorial hockey competition. Washington DC USA in 1990.
In Summary
He played several sports festivals for several states from 1981 to 1998. His journey took him to various clubs, such as Ola Video Hockey Club, Kwara Dynamos Hockey Club, Union Bank Hockey Club, Kano State Hockey Club, and Lagos State.
Post his active playing career, Mr. Ogundele ventured into administration. With a Physical and Health Education degree, he joined the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in 2005, rising to the rank of Deputy Commandant.
Beyond the hockey field, Mr. Ogundele finds relaxation in jogging and watching matches at the stadium. A man of diverse talents, he’s not only a skilled athlete but also a dedicated public servant and an essential figure in the Rocket Hockey Academy.
